So I haven't been blogging for quite some time now. I don't dare make excuses, nor would I say anything else except that I am now part of a lifelong commitment to helping others. They were not kidding when they said that being a nurse is not an easy task, but it's not as bad as they all say.
It's never easy when you're starting a career you never chose for yourself. A year ago, I have all the negative things in my mind to look forward to. Yes, it is a tiring job, not to mention stressful. When all you hear throughout the eight hours are nothing but pain, discomfort, grief, and the possibility of losing someone dear, it rubs off on you. But in between all that, there are moments when you know that you have touched someone's life, especially when they express their utmost gratitude when the most you did was just your job, and a simple touch.
I felt the deepest connection when I spent two months in the charity ward. With scarce funds, it was our job to make things work, find solutions, and find help in every way possible, even if it means having only a smile and a squeeze on the hand to give. And you would be surprised on how much those gestures mean to them.
There's this one patient that I have been attached to. She's bedridden, can barely move, and is struggling to live day by day. While her family can't afford to pay her hospital bill or even buy her needed medications, she always has someone looking out for her and praying for her recovery every day.
It's because of this patient that I want to start a fund raiser, or collect medical supplies such as syringes, adult diapers, gloves, wipes, adult milk formulas, vitamins, and other things that can help these patients on little ways. While I have no intention of collecting money to avoid any issues, I believe any other form of help will be greatly appreciated. And I commit on starting this before the year ends. I cannot do this by myself, and I practically need the sympathy of others for this to become a success.
As many nurses like me can't afford spending what meager compensation we receive, I still choose to move and love. Hopefully the Let's Move and Let's Love Campaign by United Colors of Benetton can inspire others into reaching out to those in need, and help me make my commitment happen through others. Before I go, I'd like to share a video that has inspired me when I was just starting out, thanks to Nelson of Digital Catharsis.
